The Perfect Drive

OK, so, it wasn't a driver. It was a 3 wood, which I use as my driver 95% of the time.

I was on the 7th hole of Tennison, and I lined up and ripped one.

The shot was a perfect draw, and I hit it 270 yards.

It was one of those types of draws that starts off a touch right, high, and long. I knew immediately it was going to go a long, long way. It sounded like a million bucks off the club--one the crispiest spanks imaginable.

As I was watching this ball traveling off slightly right feeling great as it soared because I knew it was a beautiful shot even if it continued its path right, but that's when it happened. It was like a little gift at the end of the shot. Just when the ball reached it's peak, and it was already looking like a damn good shot, it started turning over. It began drawing back to the center of the fairway about 5 yards. And, by center, I mean, dead center.

It was the best drive I've hit since I was 10 years old, and I was playing with my dad in a father-son golf tournament. That drive was on the 6th hole of the Presidents Course at Brookhaven--a par 4. I drove the green, which was 230 yards away. My ball missed the cup by 1 inch and rolled to within 6 feet, which would have been a double eagle--the rarest of all golf scores. (2 ways to make double eagle: a hole-in-one on a par 4, or a 2 on a par 5) That shot was, and still is the best shot I've ever hit.

These 2 shots of mine each had the feeling of perfection, if you know what that's like. It's when everything was working in perfect harmony, every ounce of effort was perfectly maximized, my intention was in it's purest form, and I got exactly what I was hoping. The feeling of pure joy came over me. It's a neat feeling that doesn't that often. In my case, it happens about every 27 years on the golf course.

Hopefully, I won't have to wait so long for the next perfect shot.

P.S. I love Tiger Woods.
